10 Horror Movies Where An Actor Plays Multiple Characters
2. Tilda Swinton - Suspiria
The 2018 remake of the classic Italian horror movie Suspiria has no right to be as good as it is. It's a movie about witches controlling a dance company, is two and a half hours long and lacks all of the colours that made the original so beloved. Despite that, it's an excellent horror experience, and a major contributing factor to that is the acting powerhouse Tilda Swinton playing three separate parts.
Saying that Swinton sinks into her roles here would be an understatement, as she utterly vanishes into two of them. The first and most obvious character is Madame Blanc, a dance choreographer who takes the lead under her wing. She's stern and frightening but surprisingly gentle for a witch.
Then, there's the far less gentle Mother Helena Markos, the deformed and vile witch who owns the company. Swinton is buried under a barrage of prosthetics here, but her performance powers through, with her creepy voice complementing the incredible make-up work.
Finally comes Dr Josef Klemperer, a tortured 82-year-old psychotherapist. Again, his German accent and incredible make-up leave you completely fooled about Swinton's involvement. This lie is even further cemented by the fact that the part is credited to a fake actor known as Lutz Ebersdorf. Maybe that counts as a fourth role too?
