10 Horror Movies Where Pranks Brutally Backfired

9. Sorority Row (2009)

Sorority Row
Summit Entertainment

Sorority Row is a remake of 1982's House on Sorority Row, the common thread being mean sorority sisters whose prank gets out of hand. (Although many horror fans feel the original is a better film. Your mileage may vary.)

Sorority girl Megan's boyfriend Garrett cheats on her, incurring the wrath of the entire sisterhood. Angry, the girls come up with a plan for revenge. Through a convoluted series of events, Garrett ends up killing Megan in the midst of a prank that was only supposed to make him THINK he had killed her. Garrett and the other girls in on the prank dump Megan into a mineshaft and swear secrecy.

Eight months later, Megan's death comes back to haunt those involved, squaring them off with a mysterious killer, whom all evidence leads to be Megan, back from the dead.

In a twist on slasher formulas, the killer is NOT Megan, or even someone avenging her. No, our killer here is Andy, the boyfriend of Final Girl Cassidy. Andy's motivation is simple - he found out about Megan's death and, as a douchey control freak, knew that as long as there was a chance Cassidy could be connected to the prank, he could never have her all to himself.

So, instead of a completely rational and sane move like encouraging everyone to explain what happened, he killed every witness who could make the connection to Megan.

Pure slasher logic.
