4. April Fools' Day

Black Christmas featured a murder intercut with the sudden arrival of carol singers, Halloween depended greatly upon Jack O’Lanterns and talk of evil spirits for its atmosphere and even Bloody Birthday managed to dispatch the cast with a child’s toy, so it makes sense that in a film called April Fools’ Day, everything turns out to be a prank.

Heiress Muffy St John (Deborah Foreman) plans to turn her home into a country inn that stages murder weekends with fake clues, fake corpses and fake cops, so she does what only a Scooby villain would and decides to stage an elaborate practical joke. Luring several teenagers to her secluded retreat, she taunts them with a painting whose eyes move, cries in the night that turn out to be a recording and a comically unhelpful Sheriff who turns out to be an actor.

There are fake body parts in the well, fake clues that point to an evil twin as the killer, and at the last possible moment, as the Final Girl (played by Amy Steel, from Friday The 13th Part 2) tries to escape, she runs into a roomful of her friends, alive and well. “That’s really funny, you guys,” she says, as the last remaining audience member walks out.
