This Romanian-French horror film seems like a pretty standard home invasion flick, with a couple in an isolated home being tormented by a gaggle of ruthless and relentless intruders.

Even without the twist ending, the film is pretty goddamn frightening. The director utilises her own fear of enclosed spaces to include some nail-bitingly claustrophobic sequences. And despite missing the hype train by about five years or so, it has inherited the grim tone of the New French Extremity Movement that came several years before it, despite not containing all that much gore.

And now, onto the twist.

At the end of the film, protagonist Lucas unmasks one of his assailants. What horror is hiding in that hoodie – an alien, a demon, a revenge-fuelled ex-lover perhaps? Nope. The attackers are all children, aged around ten to fifteen. Based on a real-life event, the assailants were persecuting the couple because they didn’t ‘play’ with them. Even the title is a clever plot twist then, as the ‘them’ ends up being our hunted main characters. Ridiculous that children would commit such acts of utter depravity? Yes. Absolutely terrifying nonetheless? Oh yes.
