10 Horror Movies You Didn't Realise Secretly Bombed

9. Jennifer's Body

Planet Terror Cherry Darling Rose McGowan
20th Century Fox

Budget: $16 million

Box Office: $31.6 million

Because Jennifer's Body centres around a cheerleader who's transformed into a man-eating succubus, you'd expect it to be a trashy monster flick. But because of its killer one-liners and subtle satire on sexual politics, this horror-comedy resonated with a lot of people, and became a hit.

Let me rephrase - it became a hit... eventually. Because Jennifer's Body has garnered an ever-growing cult-following, it's easy to forget how badly it did at the box office. Despite expectations that it would bring in a huge teenage audience, Jennifer's Body was destroyed on opening night by, of all films, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.

So, what happened? Well, according to the screenwriter, Diablo Cody, Jennifer's Body wasn't marketed properly. Instead of highlighting the feminist themes and social commentary, the advertisements focused on a lesbian kiss, hoping to "market this to boys who like Megan Fox". Cody heavily disagreed, saying, "This is a movie for girls too!" Because viewers were expecting a by-the-numbers horror flick, this underrated horror threw everybody off.

It's reassuring to see Jennifer's Body finally found his audience, but it's a shame it came a decade too late.
