Love it or hate it, there's no denying The Witch has been one of the more original horror movies released in recent times. The eerie setting of the early Colonial America wilderness is fittingly dark, and the attention to detail for the film's costumes, cultures and language is really what sells this originality.

However, beyond those gimmicks, there's really not a whole lot to this film that will leave a viewer penciling in another sitting.

The story of a Puritan family exiled from their settlement in New England following a religious dispute, The Witch explores the hardships of life in the New World and how faith and devotion impacted the way in which day to day life was carried out. It makes for an interesting tone, certainly one fit for a period horror film, but isn't something anyone is going to miss out on in their first viewing.

It is such an original film, and so hellbent on sticking to its Old English language and exceptionally slow pacing, that there is no way someone won't find themselves without a strong, unwavering opinion on The Witch from their first viewing.
