There are a plenty of reasons why the slasher community wanted to love David Gordon Green's Halloween Ends. As the title suggests, this entry serves as the conclusion of the heart-racing saga John Carpenter created almost 50 years ago.

Halloween Kills was subpar, but the previous instalment, 2018's Halloween, was the best the brand had seen in decades. so it was possible for Green to pull it off.

Also, having Michael Myers take on a protege was an idea that had never been explored before. And based on the unsettling prologue and creative opening credits, Halloween Ends was off to a reassuring start.

However, it wasn't long before flaws were apparent. Michael barely features, since the story focuses more on Haddonfield's new serial killer, Corey Cunningham. Although it was interesting to have Michael share the limelight with another psychopath, it's not what the fanbase wanted, especially for Halloween's closing chapter.

Also, the characterisation of Jamie Lee Curtis' character, Laurie Strode, doesn't make sense. She's been obsessed with taking down Michael for decades, yet gives up on her crusade immediately after the masked maniac murders her daughter. The film concludes with Laurie saying nobody will remember Michael... despite the fact she's writing a book about him.

2018's Halloween may have reinvigorated the dormant series, but Halloween Ends killed that same momentum in one fell swoop.
