More than 40 years after its original release The Exorcist is still hailed as one of the scariest horror movies of all time and earned the distinction of being the first ‘true’ horror nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award. William Friedkin’s tale of demonic possession was so terrifying, in fact, that cinemagoers were known to faint, vomit and go into hysterics while watching it.

Why You'll Never Watch it Again

It could be that the religious aspects of The Exorcist don’t hold the same kind of weight today or perhaps that the hype raises its scare factor expectations to unachievable levels. Maybe cinemagoers were still soft hippies back in the early 70s and it’s a film that can’t quite affect contemporary horror fans desensitised by years of extreme gore in quite the same way.

Either way masturbating with a crucifix, projectile pea soup vomit and telling a clergyman their mother sucks c*cks in hell just doesn’t have the same shock value today. As a classic horror, it’s a must-see but the scare factor doesn’t hold up as much these days.
