The Movie

I Spit on Your Grave tells the tale of big city writer Jennifer who retreats to the countryside to work on her first novel but, being an independent and attractive young woman, she rubs up the male locals the wrong way who decide to bring her down a peg or two via a brutal sexual assault. Meir Zarchi’s contribution to the oddly popular 1970s rape and revenge genre boasts the dubious distinction of having the longest rape scene in a mainstream, non-pornographic movie.

Why You'll Never Watch it Again

I Spit on Your Grave’s excruciating 25-minute-long gang rape scene makes Irreversible’s seem fleeting by comparison. Supporters of the film have tried to claim its feminist qualities in that the film places the audience in Jennifer’s shoes and is more about justice than glorification of violence against women, but therein lies the problem.

While the violence perpetrated against Jennifer is all too real, the vengeance she dishes out in return in unrealistic, over-staged and in some cases initiated by the ‘seduction’ of her rapists – not exactly what you’d expect the victim of a brutal assault to do just a matter of days after their attack. Whereas Irreversible might have something thought-provoking to say about revenge, I Spit on Your Grave’s version of retribution is impractical and offensive.
