10 Horror Remakes That Are Better Than The Original
2. Evil Dead (2013)
The Evil Dead remake met more than its fair share of hostility prior to its release and rightly so. How could they even attempt this without Sam Raimi in the director's chair and Bruce Campbell chainsawing his way through demons as Ash? Original director Sam Raimi technically remade Evil Dead already in 1987 with Evil Dead II, a sequel which remixed elements of the first film with a new script, but Fede Alvarez was the brave man in charge of tackling an official remake. The Uruguayan filmmaker didn't hold back, surprising fans and critics alike by creating one of the most excessively gory and depraved horror films widely released in years. Nail guns, electric bread knives and of course chainsaws all make a violent appearance as new hero Mia Allen battles the demonic forces. Alvarez smartly chooses to reinvent the story with his own unique spin, rather than simply rehashing everything that has gone before. Sure, raping trees and dismembered limbs all make a reappearance, but Evil Dead still turned out to be one of the freshest horror films released in years, paying homage to the original while blazing new ground with a female protagonist and its own iconic moments. Two words. Snake tongue.
