10 Horror Remakes That Are Better Than The Original
3. The Ring (2002)
Hideo Nakatas original story of a reporter investigating the gruesome deaths that revolve around a strange video tape created waves across the entire horror industry, becoming one of the most successful Japanese films of all time. Inevitably, Hollywood jumped on board to produce a remake of The Ring as quickly as possible, prompting groans from fans of the original. With the help of novelist Koji Suzuki, who adapted his original story for both screenplays, American director Gore Verbinski achieved the impossible and created a US remake that not only received positive reviews, but actually sold more tickets in Japan than Nakata's original. Fans of the first Ring may resent the inclusion of the remake on this list, as Nakata's movie is clearly the more iconic and influential of the two. However, Verbinki's version is arguably better all round, with more atmospheric direction, an intelligent performance from Naomi Watts and a cassette sequence that's even more beautifully shot yet disturbing than the original. Unfortunately, the popularity of The Ring also kick-started a wave of inferior US remakes that plundered the Asian horror market, squeezing every last drop of originality from these horrors in a bid to make a few more dollars for the Hollywood machine. Damn you fat cats!
