Elijah Wood has been making some out-there choices as of late. Like a Baggins who's been on one too many adventures, Wood has spent his time since Middle-Earth hanging out with a humanoid dog only he can speak with in the sitcom Wilfred, voicing strange animated short films (including those self-ascribed as a Victorian ghost story with puppets) and bouncing around Europe making horror movies. SXSW 2014 will see him play Nick Chambers, an obsessive fan who has just won a date with the hottest actress around, Jill Goddard. Of course, she refuses to keep her end of the deal, so a fellow posing as Jill's manager helps Nick essentially cyber-stalk the girl of his dreams, and of course, being that this is a thriller, it goes downhill from there. The synopsis isn't much and the trailer is so-so, but this does have the potential to be a surprise. Wood is co-producing the film, which clearly means he has some faith in it, and director Nacho Vigalondo's break-out picture, 2007's Timecrimes, was well-received by critics and audiences alike, while his follow-up, 2012's Extraterrestrial, also made a splash. So it will be interesting to see how the talented Vigalondo and Wood spice up such a seemingly ham-handed story. That, and adult film star Sasha Grey (in her continuing efforts to erase the "adult" from her handle) stars as the tantalizing Jill, so that should at least put a few butts in the seats.
