10 Huge Marvel Movie Details We've Learned From Ant-Man's Press Tour
9. "The Ancient One" Is Just A Mantle
When it was revealed that Tilda Swinton is in talks to play The Ancient One in Doctor Strange, there was obviously a lot of surprise and confusion. On the one hand, it was obviously great news that the movie had attracted such an incredible actress, but it was also on the other hand somewhat baffling to see a woman cast in the (admittedly not exactly iconic) role. After all, The Ancient One has traditionally been portrayed as an elderly Asian man, and it was more the fact that Swinton is white than a woman which riled up some comic book fans. However, Kevin Feige actually provided an explanation which makes a lot of sense in one Q&A, describing "The Ancient One" as more of a mantle than just one single person. "The sorcerers have been around for millennia, protecting us from things we didnt know about until this story," he explained. "There have been multiple , even if this one has been around for five hundred years, there were others. Therefore felt we had leeway to cast in interesting ways." That's better than him being than a really old man!
