10 Huge Movie Sequels Just Announced
4. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Though there were moans and groans at the first released footage of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, not least thanks to the Brooklyn drawl given the main character by Chris Pratt, the film went on to be mind-bogglingly successful. It crossed the billion-dollar mark with ease, and a sequel was a no-brainer.
Back in 2024, it was announced that there would be another Super Mario movie coming, though, technically, there was no confirmation of this being a sequel. Until now.
With a backlog of games and other media stretching back to 1981 to pull inspiration from, Nintendo is sending Mario and co. to space in 2026. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will adapt the Wii game from 2007, though how loosely or faithfully remains to be seen. It could be that the only thing the film has in common with the game is the outer space setting, and then, of course, there is the question of how exactly the original's post-credit scene of Yoshi will be paid off.
With a surprisingly close release date of April 2026, less than six months away at the time of writing, it is somewhat comforting that Keegan-Michael Key, who will be reprising his role as Toad alongside Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Jack Black, has already finished his work.
