When studios begin considering a sequel, it is never so much the actual quality or critical response to the film that is looked at, but more the box office figures. Money talks after all, which is why a second Minecraft movie was all but inevitable.
The first film itself was subject to a lot of questionable creative decisions, but based around a hugely popular source material, it struck a chord with the right audience and brought in a whopping $957 million worldwide.
No plot or cast details are confirmed as of yet for the sequel, though it would not be too surprising to see the likes of Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Danielle Brooks return. However, expanding on such a huge potential world could lead to the story moving away from the original; it really is anybody's guess at the moment.
As said, the financial success of A Minecraft Movie was always likely to result in a sequel, but with it set to release on 23rd July 2027, the second outing will be part of something of a new Barbenheimer situation with a sequel that was a little more surprising when it was announced...
