Pixar is of course the most prestigious animation studio working today, heralded for their smart, imaginative and emotionally resonant stories which push the boundaries of what children's films truly can be.
And even with their near-universal love from critics and audiences alike, only last year's Incredibles 2 - ironically, a superhero film itself - posted stronger box office receipts than Aquaman, with an impressively out-of-reach $1.242 billion.
Especially shocking is Aquaman beating Toy Story 3 at the box office, a movie which is accepted to be one of Pixar's best while perfectly exploiting a nostalgic fanbase for commercial dynamite.
On paper, how could a wise-cracking fish-man compete with 15 years of build-up and a host of charming, iconic characters? But Aquaman (somehow) prevailed.
