9. Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Mission: Impossible - Fallout actually scored the best box office of the hit action franchise to date, but Fallout is worth singling out because it's the best-reviewed action film of the last few years and even earned vociferous comparisons to 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road.

Despite the near-universal praise from critics and audiences - not to mention a game Tom Cruise and a lucrative Chinese release - it still couldn't compete with Arthur Curry.

Fallout topped the fourth M:I movie, Ghost Protocol, by almost $100 million, yet even with the rapturous response, the series is still a while away from joining the billion-dollar club.

It's an odd fate for a franchise which has fared well critically for its last three entries, and as such it seemed like its box office was destined to climb sharply each time. However, this could perhaps be a sign that some audiences are still a teensy bit wary of Cruise's eccentric personality.
