10 Huge Movies That Were Instantly Forgotten

8. The Artist

It's a reasonable expectation that any film which wins the Best Picture Oscar should be decently remembered for decades, because why would thousands of Academy members have voted for it to win the Big One otherwise?

And yet, it's shocking just how quickly 2011's mostly silent French dramedy The Artist fell off the face of the Earth after winning not just Best Picture but also four additional Oscars including Best Director and Best Actor.

It was a film that evidently landed at just the right time - a dew-eyed, crowd-pleasing homage to Hollywood's silent era at a time where the industry was gobbling up self-referential fare like this.

And it's certainly a good movie - charming, funny, stylish, and inventive, but as Best Picture winners go, it's hardly one that "sticks to the ribs," as they say.

There's just not much staying power to this one once you've seen it, and so within a few short years of its release, The Artist simply stopped being a film that people felt compelled to say anything about.
