10 Huge Sequels That Were Announced (And Then Just Disappeared)

2. YA Book-To-Screen Series

Golden Compass When filmmakers began adapting novels for the big screen, we all knew that there were going to be some wonderful classics and some...less than favorable flops. The latter category seems to be dominated by a plethora of Young Adult series, though there are a few exceptions - most notably Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games. However, the majority of adapted YA series have been unable to garner the success of their paperback predecessors. Book series like His Dark Materials (Phillip Pullman), The Inkworld Trilogy (Cornelia Funke), The Inheritance Cycle (Christopher Paolini), and A Series of Unfortunate Events (Lemony Snicket) €“ all widely popular series written for children and young adults €“ are prime examples of one-off films that denied their sequels the chance of ever seeing the silver screen. This can mainly be attributed to poor decisions in the film making process that led to bad reviews from the general public, but lazy plot holes and unnecessary rewriting of original scripts more than likely played their own parts in the films' downfalls. The films mentioned above took more than their fare share of liberties in the adaptation processes, which ultimately only lead to disappointed fans and disillusioned critics. Of course, we know it's nearly impossible to stay completely true to a story's original material, especially when that material is a 60 chapter novel like Eragon; transforming that monster into a 1 1/2 hour film was a bold undertaking, to say the least. Perhaps it is for this reason that books should stay books, and films should bring something new and exciting to the table instead of rehashing old plots tried and true.
