10 Huge Sequels That Were Announced (And Then Just Disappeared)

8. The Breakfast Club 2

Just typing this title out seems like a horrible affront to the original film. The fact that John Hughes even considered going forward with this sequel is astounding to me, but apparently it had been on his mind ever since the groundbreaking success of the first film. Set and filmed 10 years after the events of The Breakfast Club, the sequel would have caught up with Bender, Claire, Andrew, Brian, and Allison to see where their lives had taken them. While this isn't a completely horrid premise for a second film, it is a terribly cliche one. In the end, one of the most substantial reasons for halting the production was the volatile relationship between John Hughes and Judd Nelson, as well as Molly Ringwald's decision to move on to more mature films in an attempt to break out of the teen genre. With two of his star actors out of the picture, details failed to fall into place and The Breakfast Club 2 was added to the long list of movies that could have been but never were. Which is probably for the best. Part of the genius of The Breakfast Club was the perfect ambiguity that the story held; while we saw glimpses into the lives of the characters, we were only given them in small doses and sporadic instances. The audience learned to love the characters in the moments we saw and not the moments we were told about, as is so often the case. This allowed us to make our own assumptions about the characters' lives and personalities, and ultimately decide where the gang would have found themselves the next morning, let alone 10 years down the road. A sequel would have robbed the original film of that magic, devaluing it of the beautiful simplicity that it had achieved.
