10 Hugely Successful Movies You Didn't Realise LOST Money

9. Forest Gump

Batman Returns
Paramount Pictures

Forrest Gump was a big hit back when it released in 1994. The film about a simpleton with a heart of gold was the largest grossing release in America that year, along with being the second highest grossing worldwide.

It might shock you then, that even with revenue over $670 million, the film apparently never turned a profit.

Winston Groom, the novelist who penned the original book, stated at the time of release that he never got the money he was promised from the net gross. He was meant to get 3% of the revenue, but instead only got $350,000, a paltry sum considering just how much money the film made worldwide.

He stated that this was in part due to Hollywood accounting. Paramount, the studio that released the film, told him that even with the massive $670 million box office gross, the film had yet to make its money back.

The cited reason for this was the costs of marketing, distribution, and the fees demanded by lead actor Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis - both of whom negotiated percentages of the gross.
