10 Iconic Movie Characters With INSANE Continuity

5. Norman Bates

The Psycho film sequels and television series veer away from Robert Bloch’s books quite considerably.

Psycho II shows Norman escaping from the psychiatric hospital and dying in the novel, whereas he is released in the film. The film also introduces Norma’s sister Emma, who claims to be Norman’s real mother. The third film reveals that Emma was actually Norman’s aunt and she killed his father as she was in love with him and he chose Norma, however, the fourth film states that Norman’s father was stung to death by bees. The television series shows Norman killing his father after witnessing him abuse his mother.

Norma and her lover Joe are killed by Norman in film using strychnine, whereas in the series he kills his mother with carbon monoxide poisoning in an attempt to kill himself with her. Norman has a twin brother Robert in the novels but a half-brother Dylan in the TV series (from a relationship between Norma and her brother). The series also shows Norman killing Marion Crane’s lover Sam in the shower instead of her.

Norman’s final fate is either dying in a car crash in the books, surviving and recovering in the films (with a baby on the way), shot by Dylan in the 2013 television series, or dying of old age in the mental institution in the original 1987 television series!
