10 Iconic Movie Moments (That Were Only Added At The Last Minute)
7. The Hemingway Quote - Seven
The Iconic Scene: The ending of Seven changed a lot through its production. The head-in-a-box reveal was an idea discarded early on, but worked its way back into the film when David Fincher was sent an early draft by accident. And then there was an alternate ending where Morgan Freeman's Somerset kills Kevin Spacey's John Doe instead of Mills (Brad Pitt), nullifying the serial killer's victory. But the scene being looked at here is the final moments, where Mills is arrested and the soon-for-retirement Somerset's utterly emotionally destroyed. Over twilight, the veteran cop muses, "Ernest Hemingway once wrote, 'The world is a fine place and worth fighting for.' I agree with the second part." Why Was It Last Minute? In his early career David Fincher didn't have it easy when dealing with the studios. His debut feature, Alien 3, was tampered with so heavily by 20th Century Fox that most fans don't even consider it to be his film. Seven marked a more distinct film in many ways, but he still came under creative fire; the entire final scene, particularly the down-beat quote, were added after the rest of the film was completed just so the studio would sign off on the director's cut. This ending has divided audiences for almost two decades, with some finding the last scene cheap and unnecessary, preferring that the film had ended on Doe's death as originally planned. Still can't argue that the quote is nice in isolation.
