10 Iconic Performances That Weren't Even Nominated For An Oscar

1. James Dean - Rebel Without A Cause

Is this some kind of a sick joke? This is the most memorable performance from an iconic film star whose pop culture status was augmented by the fact that he died young, suddenly and tragically, unable to fulfill his vast untapped potential. James Dean provides the definitive performance as a 1950s teen, a demographic very much in its infancy. Everything about him, from his sensitivity to his lack of positive adult role models to his stylish red leather jacket seemed to reflect a generation of individuals stuck between childhood and adulthood. His costars Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo were both nominated for Academy Awards, and although in a lot of ways James Dean's performance was more subdued and low key than either of theirs, it's still astonishing that he was overlooked. He so perfectly plays the role of a kid desperately trying to be a grown-up, but looks at the adults around him and realizes that he doesn't want to be like any of them. The sense of alienation struck a chord with young viewers in the 50s, and has been discovered and appreciated by every generation of teenagers since.
