4. The Empire Strikes Back Luke, I Am Your Father
The Scene: After our first real taste of proper lightsaber battling in the original Star Wars trilogy Luke finds himself armless over the edge of a giant metallic tube, face to face with his worst enemy, Darth Vader. If this wasnt a bad enough situation from the poor Tattooine farm-boy, then Darthy uttering the immortal sentence I am your father sure as hell made it a lot worse.
Why It Overshadows The Movie: This is potentially the most iconic scene in one of the biggest cinematic franchises in history, now that takes some going. Its also a shame for young people new to Star Wars as there is no chance of them ever seeing this scene as the massive shock that it was. Parodied to the extreme and heralded as one of the greatest twists in cinema this is possibly the most well known scene in history. A thrilling action set piece concluded with a line that helped take the franchise in a more sophisticated direction than good guy kill bad guy and, I felt, gave way to an interesting prequel trilogy and enhanced the stature of Darth Vader, the greatest movie villain/good guy ever.
