10 Image Comics That Would Make Great Movies (And How To Make Them)
4. Rat Queens
The film industry hasn't had the best track record with fantasy of late. Outside of Peter Jackson's Tolkien adaptations, the genre has produced very little of note in the last few decades, with Warcraft: The Beginning and The Great Wall being among the most recent examples of disappointing fantasy fare. That could change, were Kurtis Wiebe's Rat Queens brought to a cinema near you.
One of the main problems when adapting fantasy, is that it is inherently ridiculous. It has to be, otherwise it wouldn't contain exotic characters or otherworldly landscapes. The issue lies in translating this ridiculousness to screen - it's difficult to make characters say lines like "You shall feel the cold burn of my wicked steel" without it sounding silly. The great thing about Rat Queens is that it's a totally self-aware homage to D&D, and wears its more ridiculous aspects like a badge of honour.
Following the exploits of the titular Rat Queens, a group of foul-mouthed, eccentric swords for hire, Wiebe's series has had some teething problems over the years. Following various artist changeovers, the book went on hiatus in 2016, before returning for a soft-reboot this year. With the slate effectively wiped clean, Rat Queens is in an ideal position to be adapted to the big screen.
Though his Ghosbusters reboot possessed a Moses-like ability to split audiences in half, Paul Feig would be a great choice to direct a Rat Queens adaptation. His entire back catalogue is filled with funny, rebellious, and downright crass women, and it'd be interesting to see how a comedy director approaches this kind of a fantasy story.
