10 Image Comics That Would Make Great Movies (And How To Make Them)
3. Wytches
Far and away one of the scariest books currently being produced, Wytches is the brainchild of acclaimed Batman writer Scott Snyder. Although he may be unfortunate to share a last name with Batman's worst enemy, Zack Snyder, Scott Snyder breathed new life into the Caped Crusader a few years ago, when DC ushered in its New 52 reboot. His Court of Owls run introduced a fresh cast of villains that seemed legitimately terrifying, that is, until you read Wytches.
Set in the small town of Litchfield, New Hampshire, the series tells the story of a particularly menacing forest inhabited by the titular wytches. On occasion, the townsfolk of Litchfield will identify and 'pledge' a person they don't like to the wytches, offering them as a sacrifice in return for some great favour.
To reveal any more would be to spoil too much, but artist Jock's uterly ghastly depiction of the wytches is something to behold, and his style is reminiscent of Dave McKean's work on he original Arkham Asylum graphic novel.
Wytches has already been picked up for a film adaptation by Plan B Entertainment, with Brad Pitt on board as a producer. No director has been announced yet, but Jennifer Kent, director of acclaimed Australian horror hit The Babadook, would be the ideal candidate.
Kent knows how to cram fear, stress and oppression into every scene - as Snyder does with every panel - and being able to tease out graphic and alarming images without constantly revealing them fully is a key skill when telling this kind of a story.
