Not every unrecognizable transformation comes down to weight loss or the acquiring of an absurdly jacked midsection. For some stars, becoming a completely new person can mean as little as a switch up in wardrobe and hair colour after years on television playing an instantly recognizable starring role.

After over a decade playing the put-upon protagonist of Shameless, Emmy Rossum recently abandoned her dark locks in favour of a bright blonde barnet to star as Angelyne, the titular character of a miniseries from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail.

It’s a fitting reinvention, as Angelyne herself is a real-life pop culture icon, famous in Los Angeles for—well, for her decades-long pursuit of fame, really. A camp icon, Angelyne is being immortalized in a television adaptation of The Hollywood Reporter’s 2017 profile on her.

Rossum is unrecognizable in the first glimpse she offered fans of the series via her Instagram. Gone is her signature mousy brown hair, in its place a bright gold bouffant befitting an eighties icon.

Only time will tell how much of Angelyne’s plastic surgery Rossum will be recreating, but it’s fair to say the slight actor will need to become curvier, fuller-faced, and blindingly blonde to do Angelyne any justice.
