Now hold on, you may be wondering why a film as well-loved and respected as The Thing is on this list, but the fact of the matter is that John Carpenter's now iconic orgy of violence and tentacles was both a critical and commercial failure on release.

Carpenter's previous film Escape From New York is a well-loved slice of dystopian action that scored big at the box-office back in its day. Seeking to capitalise on that film's success, Carpenter once again teamed up with Kurt Russell and a host of his other regular cast members for this body horror masterpiece.

Set inside an Antarctic research base, a group of scientists and engineers discover a parasitic life-form that can change shape at will. Que all manner of grotesquery and paranoia as one by one, the crew are slowly wiped out by an ever-changing predator that could potentially be any one of them.

The Thing has since gone on to become a classic of both the science fiction and horror genres, as well as a footnote in history of practical effects. It has also become well respected by critics and scholars, many of whom consider it to be Carpenter's best film.
