10 Incredible Movie Performances That Have Flown Under The Radar In 2019
6. James McAvoy In Glass
January feel as though it was a lifetime ago. But - if you can - cast your minds back to the start of the year and there was quite a bit of buzz surrounding M. Night Shyamalan's ending to his make-shift 'superhero' trilogy.
Glass would see former Unbreakable enemies Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis return as Elijah Price and David Dunn, respectively. Yet, they would now be joined by Split's James McAvoy. Playing The Horde, the role sees McAvoy depicting a tortured Kevin Wendell Crumb, who is contantly trying to manage his ever-changing body chemistry - which is made up of 23 different personalities.
McAvoy absolutely dominates this film, flirting between personalities on a whim and making us feel crippling empathy for a man who is helplessly being bullied by a collection of dangerous inner-voices. If the emotional content of his performance isn't to your liking, you cannot argue with his physical transformation when forced to morph into the animalistic beast. It's bloody terrifying and makes McAvoy look notably bigger than he actually is.
The film itself didn't do it for everyone and Shyamalan's attempt to subvert the superhero genre didn't make for the film that many wanted to see, yet McAvoy's unbelievable commitment to one of the most difficult roles in modern cinema definitely needs to be admired for what it is - brilliant.
