Any film that is tasked with bringing the life of Elton John to the big screen isn't going to spend much time dealing with anyone other than the titular superstar and with good reason.

John spent years living an erratic lifestyle that many had been yearning to see span into a biopic. So, when they all finally got their wish in 2019, the colourful juke-box musical retelling of his life - from the perspective of the man himself - left fans stunned.

Yet, most of the praise was lavished onto the admittedly mesmerising performance of Taron Egerton as the Rocketman, when in fact he wasn't the only British actor to give a stellar account of himself in the movie.

Jamie Bell's portrayal of Bernie Taupin - John's long-time collaborator and friend - was pitched perfectly, with Bell capturing the youthful zest of the songwriter in the two's earlier days as pals, before gradually growing concerned over John's antics as his friend's world began to fall apart.

It was a deeply textured performance and the chemistry that the two young stars had on-screen convinced you that this odd-ball partnership could have actually worked in real life - as it did.

Without Bell as Egerton's foil, would the star of the film have still garnered the same level of acclaim? The only thing that is clear is that Bell definitely deserves some more love for his part in the smash hit.
