Robert Rodriguez' Alita: Battle Angel was by no means a bad movie.

Sure, it may have sacrificed some of its narrative nuance in favour of creating a world that felt as authentic as it did farfetched, but the action set-pieces and convincing relationships between the some of the main players proved to be enough to fuel talk of a potential sequel.

Yet, one performance stood head-and-shoulders above the film's A-list ensemble: Rosa Salazar's titular lead.

The relative unknown had previously appeared in both the Divergent and Maze Runner series', but her coming out party definitely came in the form of a revived cyborg suffering from amnesia by the name of Alita.

Requiring the actor to piece together fragments of information which would eventually lead to her realising her true potential, the performance became even more impressive when you took into account the fact that her face had to be digitally enhanced by performance capture in order to give the character her signature other-worldly eyes - along with a partially robotic body.

Salazar succeeded in bringing this iconic manga character to life and in a year where countless other blockbusters have stolen the spotlight, this break-out performance could stand as one of the most important to happen in 2019.
