10 Incredible Movies That Barely Have Any Dialogue
4. The Driver
Before Nicols Winding Refn's Drive there was Walter Hill's The Driver, a film which Quentin Tarantino has referred to as one of the coolest movies of all time. Drive and The Driver share some striking similarities, both using the actions of their brooding, silent protagonist to communicate all that needs to be said.
The Driver - a quiet type played by Ryan O'Neal - makes a living stealing fast cars and using them as getaway vehicles for big-time L.A. robberies. Much of the film's run time is spent poking around dingy parking lots and dimly lit back alleys, as O'Neal's obsession with successfully carrying out his job is pushed to the absolute limits by The Detective, a man who is bent on bringing him down.
There's not much more to be said about the film, because the film doesn't say a lot itself - its neon underworld has to be seen to be understood. We don't need any specifics to know what the characters goals are and the values for which they live.
