10 Incredible Movies With ONE Unnecessary Scene
1. The Undying Lands - The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King
There is no question that The Lord of the Rings trilogy is an absolute triumph in cinema. But there's also no question the ending is a bit of a drag. Billy Crystal put it best at the 2004 Academy Awards when he said Return of the King received, "11 nominations - one for each ending." Even though he was exaggerating, he wasn't far off.
Some would defend the franchise's long-winded conclusion since it had to wrap up so many loose ends. As hard as it is to believe, the climax was meant to be longer but director, Peter Jackson, wisely decided to shorten it. Nevertheless, he should've trimmed it a bit more. During one of the many endings, Frodo agrees to venture to The Undying Lands. Because no one can return from this realm, Frodo has to say goodbye to his friends forever.
Unfortunately, many viewers were unsure what the significance was of The Undying Lands unless they read the books. Because of this, this potentially poignant scene was lost on them.
This scene was not in the novel (it was briefly mentioned in the Appendices), and the film could've easily worked without it.
