10 Incredible Movies With ONE Unnecessary Scene
2. Diarrhoea - Bridesmaids
Bridesmaids wasn't just a great comedy - it made the careers of nearly everyone connected to it. It catapulted Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Rebel Wilson, and Melissa McCarthy to super-stardom. (McCarthy also has the honor of being one of the few people Oscar-nominated for a comedy)
Earning nearly ten times its budget, Bridesmaids went on to become the most successful movie produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Paul Feig.
Even though a lot of R-rated comedies are let down by unnecessarily crass humour, Bridesmaids gets away with it since most scenes are layered with witty banter, masterful improv, and astounding performances.
Unfortunately, there's one scene that stops the film from being even better. While the bridesmaids try on their dresses, they all suddenly suffer diarrhoea, leading to a ridiculous gross-out sequence.
Although this sort of humour can work in the right comedy (Dumb & Dumber executed it perfectly) watching women crapping themselves in the sink or on the street doesn't gel with the rest of the story.
According to the lead star, Kristen Wiig, and writer, Annie Mumolo, they wanted the script to focus on snappy dialogue and hilarious one-liners. But Apatow and Feig pushed for zany, physical comedy, and basically forced the diarrhoea bit into movie. Even though this sort of humour can be funny if it's artistic, this scene is just gross for the sake of being gross.
