Rose Glass' stunning directorial debut Saint Maud would be a deeply atmospheric, nerve-jangling horror film no matter who played the lead role of lonely Roman Catholic nurse Maud, but Morfydd Clark's note-perfect performance elevates it from great to a genuine masterpiece.

This is a carefully calibrated performance that keeps the audience guessing quite what's going to become of Clark's Maud until the film's jaw-dropping final scene, but one that bottles a very authentic sense of crushing loneliness.

We're right there alongside Clark in basically every scene, and she has to carry much of the movie effectively by herself, which she does with tremendous skill.

Clark's porcelain features and softly spoken demeanour belie Maud's deep well of inner torment, splayed across the screen so brilliantly as Glass progressively ratchets up the slow-burn unease.

For her efforts, Clark received a Best Actress nomination from the British Independent Film Awards.
