10 Incredible Performances The Academy Ignored This Year
7. Awkwafina (The Farewell)
The Farewell came seemingly out of nowhere and completely levelled the majority of movie-goers who were lucky enough to catch the comedy-drama on the big screen.
Much of the film centres around Chinese-American writer Billi Wang (Awkwafina) and her family doing all they can to keep their grandmother's impending death from the woman herself, and this all leads to one last family gathering before she passes away.
Awkwafina's performance is undoubtedly the driving force throughout this heartfelt story of how different cultures deal with death and she even went on to secure a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her work. However, despite becoming the first woman of Asian descent to win a Golden Globe in a lead actress category, she still wasn't given the honour of being nominated at this year's Academy Awards.
That ridiculous decision felt like even more fuel being added to the fire that was the ceremony being seen as a white-wash for the most part.
Yet, this one stings that little bit more as Scarlett Johansson managed to get herself nominated for her roles in both Jojo Rabbit and Marriage Story. We get it, she had a strong year, but couldn't one of those spots have been awarded to one of the finest performances of 2019?
