10 Incredible Scenes From Mediocre Movies
1. Mickey Rourke's Oscar-Worthy Monologue - The Expendables
The first Expendables is a perfectly serviceable '80s action movie throwback, albeit not something most people would call a genuinely good movie.
It has its moments of gory action, though generally takes itself a little too seriously compared to its more light-hearted, Chuck Norris-starring sequel.
But the original film's seriousness did allow it to include a five-star, Oscar-worthy dramatic monologue totally out of nowhere, courtesy of Mickey Rourke's wisdom-spouting support character Tool.
Mid-way through the film, Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) visits Tool to discuss a woman he left behind on his previous mission, prompting Tool to retort with his own soul-destroying story of a botched mission in Bosnia.
His teammates had been slaughtered around him, but what he really remembers is watching a woman commit suicide by jumping off a bridge and doing nothing to save her despite having the chance.
Rourke pours his heart and soul into the scene, conveying Tool's existential anguish with every fiber of his being, capped off by the smart decision not to have Barney retort but simply walk off in quiet devastation.
Something this brilliantly acted has no business at all existing in a movie about Jurassic action heroes teaming up to mow down hordes of anonymous foreign goons.
