The Star Wars franchise is so thoroughly overflowing with breathtaking imagery, but not one shot has proven quite so emblematic of what Star Wars is than Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) staring longingly to the stars from his Tatooine home in A New Hope.
That wonder for what lies far beyond defines not only the film and the franchise as a whole, but really the entire genre of sci-fi, built as it is on a playful, even childlike curiosity of the unknown.
When you factor in both how visually seamless the effects work is and the affecting sweep of John Williams' incredible musical score, the single shot is in many ways responsible for ensuring the audience is fully bonded to Luke, soaking in this gorgeously evocative sight with him.
As a result it's little surprise that future entries have contained numerous callbacks to the image, including a rather unearned glimpse right at the end of The Rise of Skywalker.
