8. Needle Torture - Imprint

Takashi Miike is a master at making things look painful, and this scene in his short film Imprint goes to show how sometimes you only need small things to create a significant amount of pain.

Imprint follows an American man named Christopher returning to Japan to rescue a sex-worker that he fell in love with. Instead of finding Komomo, he spends the night talking with a disfigured worker who knew her. Eventually, we learn what happened to the woman he was searching for, in painful detail.

Komomo was tortured incessantly by the headmistress and a grin touting needle fanatic. Instead of producing significant damage, they opt to use needles in horrible places. These include the insides of her fingernails and horrendously, the upper part of her gums, which leaves poor Komomo with her mouth permanently stretched open.

The scene shows how little incisions can cause more pain than even large scale disembodiment. The film is a fascinating exploration of guilt, torture, lies and deceit. There are plenty of other disturbing moments outside of this one.
