8. Road to Perdition
I love how cool Michael Sullivan is as a prolific bank robber. He just walks straight into an Al Capone-owned bank on any given day in broad daylight, sits down at the bank managers desk, points a gun at him and calmly explains he is robbing them. Michael, a former hired gun is betrayed by his bosses in the first act of this film and suffers the loss of his wife and youngest son. On his way across the country to find and kill those responsible, he knocks over quite a few banks specialising in the mobs dirty money. He even lets the terrified victims keep a few bills for themselves. Its hard not to enjoy watching Sullivan played by Tom Hanks stick the finger up to the people who wronged him on his travels, before he eventually goes on to shoot them all dead in the street and claim his vengeance. There is a welcome sprinkling of comedy during the little robbery montage to enjoy as well. Michaels son, also called Michael, has learned to drive and is operating as the worlds most unreliable wheelman. The youngster doesnt quite master the clutch at first and in a couple of hilarious scenes is either barely moving towards the banks front door, or riding up on to the kerb and almost flattening his dad. Amusing all around.
