10 Incredibly Smug Movie References You Might Have Missed

1. Be Kind Rewind - Sigourney Weaver Saves Ghostbusters

Sigourney Weaver Ghostbusters

Be Kind Rewind is a curious animal - it's not the most memorable of movies, but it is one of Jack Black's finest roles, before the wheels well and truly came off his career and Hollywood stopped knowing what to do with him. The film also has a tender message under its hood, and a central concept - of sweding movies - that is genius and it is digestible for fans. Obviously, the idea of remaking movies and renting them out under the pretence that they are in fact the originals is unlawful and attracts the attentions of the law, in the shape of Sigourney Weaver a studio power and a court bailiff, who appear to insist that they are in violation of copyright, and all of their sweded stock must be destroyed.

The decision to cast Weaver in this role, considering one of the sweded films is Ghostbusters, feels like an obvious nod to her role in that film, as she seeks to protect her own interests in the original project. It's a hugely tongue-in-cheek moment, and could be deemed a red flag provocation to the Ghostbusters rights holders - if it wasn't for the fact that the references were obviously authorised.
