10 Incredibly Talented Actors Who Should Really Call It A Day
2. Al Pacino
1 Oscar, 4 Golden Globes, 2 Emmys. Michael Corleone, Tony Montana, Frank Serpico, Lefty Ruggiero, Sonny Wortzik (from Dog Day afternoon). Many people (myself included) would consider Al Pacino to be one of the greatest modern actors, up there with De Niro and Hoffman. So why is he so much higher than them?
The reason: Jack and Jill. Al Pacino was in an Adam Sandler movie. Why would he do that? WHY?!
What seemed to distinguish Pacino in his early days was his quiet, smooth confidence. Michael Corleones change from innocent bystander to brutal mob leader is one of the greatest transformations in the history of film, and much of this credit goes to Pacino. But after Scent of a Woman in 1992, Pacino began to push aside his earlier persona, and instead turned into the loud-mouthed, irritated, angry old man that we know today.
Really, though, Scarface is where this started. This is probably one of the only times that he has played the angry Pacino in the right way. Since then, we have had occasional good movies (Insomnia), followed by loathsome bad (Gigli). Some of the roles he has chosen are downright disgraceful!
Now lets be easy. Pacino did just win a couple Emmys for the series Angels in America and You Dont Know Jack. And, as mentioned before, the movie Stand Up Guys was kind of fun. But, I find it difficult to see him in Jack and Jill, and then remember that this is the same man who played Michael Corleone. Yikes.
