6. Indiana Jones And The Stairway To Heaven
No, this has nothing to do with Led Zeppelin's iconic song in any capacity - the title is a makeshift one we've given it due to the fact that this potential Indy movie was basically Last Crusade before it was officially titled Last Crusade. In other words, before Indy III was laid out in its final terms, screenwriter Menno Meyjes - who had worked with Steven Spielberg on The Color Purple and Empire of the Sun - was brought in to pen a drift of the script, and though his version of the story did feature Henry Jones Snr. in a major role, it was also downright balmy in other places. That's to say, this version of the plot had Indy going after his father in Montseger, France and falling in love with a nun called Chantal, with various set-pieces in the likes of Istanbul, Petra, Venice (a location that was memorably retained), all whilst searching for the Holy Grail. So why Stairway to Heaven, then? Well, because in the film's final scene, Henry Jones Snr. touches the grail, a mystical staircase appears, and he goes up it into Heaven. Literally. That's what was written to happen. All this was reshuffled and tweaked of course, 'cause what was Menno Meyjes thinking?
