9. Ted V Mikels
Apartheid Slave Women's Justice. Now that is going to be a good film! Just one of Ted V Mikel's many colourful titles over the years. Few directors have thrown themselves into film making with such gusto and abandon as Mikels, creating his own personal visions rather than having to bow to Studio Diktat. Of course his films are all uniformly terrible to watch and ineptly constructed. They did the rounds of the drive ins and grindhouses where they gathered a cult following for their cheesy special effects and off the wall plots. The Corpse Grinders, Astro Zombies (which totally wasted the presence of the great Tura 'Faster Pussycat' Satana), 10 Violent Women, Blood Orgy of the She Devils - these films sound much better on paper than they are on the screen. Mikels was infamous for many years for living with his own personal 'Harem' of women in a castle. He has, since the mid 1990s, run his own production company - TVM Productions in Las Vegas. I hardly think he will be churning out Oscar nominated films, but Mikels has an enthusiasm in his films that makes them infectious to watch even though they are really, really bad.
