10 Infamous Failed Blockbusters That Cost Obscene Money
6. Sahara
Sahara feels relatively small in scale, and gives off some old-school adventure vibes, so much so that it seems hard to believe that the movie cost $160m to put together.
However, things start to make sense when you discover that a $2m action scene was shot and never used, one of the writers was paid half a million dollars and didn't even receive a credit, the production was sued more than once, and leaked documents revealed that some of the budget was even used to bribe the Moroccan government.
Another spectacular failure that was designed to launch an entire franchise, Sahara is about as forgettable and unremarkable as studio blockbusters can be, and while it may have opened at the top of the domestic box office it quickly fell off a cliff and crawled to a meager $119m worldwide. That's not a great return for a project that court proceedings revealed had incurred eye-watering total expenses of $281.1m.
