10 Infamous Failed Blockbusters That Cost Obscene Money
4. Tomorrowland
Brad Bird had already established himself as one of animation's finest talents having directed three all-timers in The Iron Giant, The Incredibles and Ratatouille, and the critical and commercial acclaim that greeted Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol seemed to indicate that he would enjoy similar success in the live-action realm.
Unfortunately, Tomorrowland proved that 'Second Movie Syndrome' is a very real thing, and while the movie is hardly lacking in imagination, ambition or jaw-dropping visuals, Bird's storytelling abilities seemed to fail him for the first time in his career.
Having been convinced to return to the world of effects-driven blockbusters for the first time since Batman & Robin, George Clooney will probably never make the same mistake again. Every penny of the $190m budget is very much up there on the screen for everyone to see, but no amount of stunning production design or inventive technology can compensate for the huge shortcomings in the narrative department.
Tomorrowland's failure, which was rumored to have lost Disney up to $150m, also had an unfortunate knock-on effect that saw Tron 3 get canned, with the studio getting cold feet about investing huge money in another expensive project that wasn't guaranteed to be a box office hit.
