10 Infamous Movie Moments That Prove You Should Avoid Marriage

5. Meet The Parents - The Lie Detector Scene

Meet The Parents 1

One of the things to consider with marriage is who will be the possible in-laws. In Jay Roach's Meet the Parents, Greg aka Gaylord Focker (Ben Stiller) gets to meet his possible future in-laws, Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro) and Dina Byrnes (Blythe Danner). Jack doesn't make it easy for Greg and makes him jump through several hoops to test his nerve. Greg, of course, wants to win Jack's approval so he may propose to his daughter, Pam (Teri Polo). One of the nerve-wrecking hoops occurs when Greg stumbles upon a secret room in Jack's den that has an antique lie detector. He interrogates Greg with questions such as the quality of the dinner's pot roast, if he watches pornographic videos, and if he is living with his daughter--a fact that Pam does not want revealed to his father. Greg's experience is so harrowing that he contemplates not proposing for fear of having to live under his in-laws scrutiny, definitely a reason in avoiding marriage entirely.
