The "Plot Hole"

If the mission to destroy the One Ring was so perilous, why didn't Gandalf (Ian McKellen) just ask the Eagles to fly the Fellowship to Mount Doom so they could drop it in?

The Explanation

In J.R.R. Tolkien's novels, it's made abundantly clear that the Eagles aren't physically capable of carrying humans vast distances, to say nothing of the fact that the presence of the Eagles would've definitely alerted Sauron and had him circle the Nazgûl in retort.

Furthermore, it's important to remember that Hobbits have a particularly potent level of resistance to the Ring's corrupting influence, which absolutely cannot also be said for the Eagles.

It goes without saying that the main reason is that the story simply needs the Eagles not to fly the Ring to Mordor, but there are a number of plausible, in-built reasons for why they can't do it. Hardly a plot hole, then.
