10 Infuriating Flaws That Ruin Otherwise Awesome Directors
7. Style Over Substance - Guillermo Del Toro
Accomplishments: Del Toro may have just one Oscar nomination (for writing Pan's Labyrinth), but he has a passionately devoted fanbase, for his earlier Mexican fare such as Cronos and The Devil's Backbone, his fanboy-friendly Hellboy movies, and of course the brilliant Pan's Labyrinth.
The Flaw: Del Toro is one of the most frustrating directors working today, because he's so talented and yet so often bogs himself down with generic or underwhelming scripts which don't do his strong style much service.
At the height of his powers, we get a Pan's Labyrinth, but lately he's been squandering his talents on the shallow Pacific Rim and disappointingly dull Crimson Peak. To his credit, both films look fantastic visually, and he directs them about as well as anyone could expect,
It's telling that Del Toro himself collaborated on both of these scripts, but it seems like more of his attention was devoted to the gorgeous production design rather than fashioning an interesting story and memorable characters.
When he finally settles on his next project, we'll be eagerly anticipating him (hopefully) breaking the cycle.
